Variations of Five-Card-Stud Poker

This variant of Five-Card-Stud favours the lower hands as well as the high hands.
The player with the lowest value cards begins the betting round, the player with the highest card has to pay the bring-in.

At the end of the game, when the time comes for the showdown, the pot is split in two: one for the low hands and one for the high hands. When scoring a low hand, the system is very much reversed from the common way of scoring a poker hand.

Pairs work against the player, all the great hands like the full house and the straight flush are ignored. The player with the lowest hand is rewarded the low-pot. The high playing hands proceed as they would in an ordinary game of five-card-stud poker.

Canadian Stud

This format is also known as Scandinavian Stud or Sökö It is almost identical to the original game of Five-Card-Stud; but it introduces two new hands into the game. As there is a low possibility of straights and flushes in stud poker, the Canadian Stud variant allows for four-card-straights and four-card-flushes. The four-card-straight beats a pair, the four-card-flush beat the four-card-straight, two pairs beat a four-card-flush.

Mexican Stud

This way of playing five-card-stud poker can also be called 'roll your own game'. The first two cards will both be dealt facing down, the players choose one of them and turn it over on the count of three. The game proceeds very much like the original, with the difference that all cards are dealt facing down and the players have to turn them over once everyone has been dealt to. By the end the hand looks exactly like it does in the traditional game, four cards exposed and one last hole card facing down.

Asian Five-Card Stud

This game is basically the traditional Five-Card-Stud, but it is played with what is known as a 'stripped deck'. This means all cards from 2 to 6 (inclusive) are removed.

Down-Up Variations

Two Down, Three Up (2-3) means the first two cards will be dealt as hole cards and won't be turned over until time comes for the showdown.

Three Down, Two Up (3-2) means the player is dealt three cards face down and the last two cards face up. This way of playing only has three rounds of betting.

One Down, Three Up, One Down (1-3-1) means the game is played like the traditional five-card-stud, until the final card, which is dealt face down rather than up. This lends the game an element of surprise in the last moments.
