Caribbean Stud Poker

Caribbean stud poker, or simply Caribbean stud, is a casino table game which has become a popular fixture in most internet casinos. It has similar rules to five-card stud poker but is by no means simply a re-hashing of the same game. The most important difference between Caribbean stud poker and five-card stud poker is that the only competitor a player has to beat in the Caribbean version is the house, represented by the dealer. Players are only allowed to play one hand per deal, which sets Caribbean stud poker apart from a range of other casino table games, such as blackjack.

In Caribbean stud poker the player places and ante bet before any cards are dealt. Unless a bet has been placed, the dealer will not provide a player with cards. Aside from the ante bet, which is connected only to the respective hands of the player and the dealer, a player can also place a small, almost symbolic wager for a chance of winning the progressive jackpot involved in the game. For a straight flush the player will receive 10% of the jackpot, a royal flush wins the lucky holder 100% of the jackpot. Most online casinos also offer and automatic pay-out for four of a kind, a flush and a full house.

Once the player has placed his stake, the dealer will pass out five cards - face up - to the player and then five cards for himself - face down. When all cards have been dealt, the dealer will turn one of his cards face up.

This card is the only thing the player has to go on to decide whether to raise or fold.

If the player decides to stay in the game s/he will raise by placing twice the original ante in the bet box. If the player chooses to fold the ante placed before the cards were dealt will be lost.

When all bets have been made the dealer will turn the remainder of his hand face up. To qualify for a chance to win the game, the dealer's hand must include at least one ace and one king (meaning, i.e., that the worst hand that would allow a dealer to qualify for the game would be ace, king, two, three, four). If the dealer has a worse hand than this, and fails to qualify, he will pay out even money for the ante bet. The raise however, is void and returned to the player if the dealer does not qualify.

If the dealer does in fact qualify, his hand is pitched against the player's hand. The standard ranking of poker hands applies to Caribbean stud poker. To learn more about poker hands and their value, check our dedicated page.
