European Blackjack

European blackjack is very similar to standard blackjack, but it does have a few differences. As with any other blackjack game, a rule change will have an effect on basic strategy, and European blackjack is no different. It must also be made clear that blackjack in the UK is different to continental European blackjack as well as varying from Vegas blackjack. Know which game you are playing before you put down your money, and you will improve your returns significantly.

First of all, let us consider the basic continental version of European blackjack. For the most part, it is the same as standard blackjack. The cards have the same values and the goal is still to get a blackjack hand of a ten-point card and an Ace on the first two cards, or else to draw to a higher score than the dealer without going over 21. Some of the differences in rules are:

  • Dealer stands on soft 17 (standard blackjack rules at most US casinos call for a hit)
  • No-peek for dealer, so the player can lose on doubles and split hands to dealer blackjack
  • Double down only on hard 9, 10 or 11
  • Double is allowed after a split

The dealer standing on soft 17 is advantageous to the player, as is doubling after a split. The no-peek rule and restricted double down rules are technically disadvantageous to the player, though 9, 10 and 11 are usually the only sensible scores to double down on anyway.

Blackjack in the UK is different to continental European blackjack as well as varying from Vegas blackjack.

In the UK, doubling down is generally allowed on any two cards, and this includes soft totals. Otherwise, the game is like continental European blackjack. Internet casinos are likely to use the UK version, but finding the specific rules in the help section of your chosen Internet casino is advised.

Players who want to play European blackjack in the fastest and most convenient way possible should be sure to look for it at Internet casinos. Those casinos that cater specifically to European players are the most likely to have the game, while casinos focused on American patrons are less likely to have European blackjack on offer.
